SGA unanimously Passes Resolution on Single-Family Definition
#11-01 asks A-CC Officials to Change Approach to Enforcing the Single-Family Definition, and to penalize students and landlords who violate performance standards.
· The Student Government Association approved Resolution #11-01 tonight unanimously. Resolution #11-01 asks A-CC officials to adopt performance standards for enforcement of the Single-Family Definition. In addition, #11-01 asks that performance standards be enforced with penalties against student and landlord violators.
· Currently, A-CC limits student living in single-family areas with occupancy restrictions: No more than two unrelated individuals may live together.
· However, if local residents are concerned with conduct of students living in their neighborhoods, the local residents should regulate conduct rather than occupancy. The current system paints all University students with a wide brush: Effectively, the A-CC has said that all students are boisterous and messy, and therefore cannot live in single-family neighborhoods.
· By adopting performance standards, students who behave well would be able live alongside local residents in single-family areas. Performance standards could include noise restrictions, yard upkeep, parking restrictions (no cars in the lawn), and restrictions on lawn furniture (no interior furniture outside the home).
· As long as A-CC continues to enforce the Single-Family definition, students remain second-class citizens in Athens. The SGA has proposed a reasonable and workable solution that would both allow students to live in neighborhoods, and assure neighborhood quality.
· A copy of the resolution is attached. For more info, check out our website: www.arches.uga.edu/~choof/sga.
